Tile Backer Boards

Tiling foundations to replace the current solution of plywood that promotes damp and rot.

CemBacker is a fibre cement based product that proves as an exceptional tile backer board solution. Offering a solid, smooth surface and impermeability to tile on. The CemBacker's characteristic of being impermeable to water is especially helpful in rooms with tiles, as typically these rooms are exposed to increased water spray, such as; wet rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. When previously the use of plywood being used would lead to rot and damp patches as the water to pass the 'barrier'. Years of research shows fibre cement is the go-to standard when it comes to a tile backing solution, when compared to traditional methods such as plywood or plasterboards which are deemed unsuitable, due to their lack of water resistance and durability. This has been highlighted more so of late through changes of the (BS) British Standards advising not to tile on plywood and plasterboard substrates but rather use an appropriate tile backing board.

Fibre Cement are gifted with strength which means you can use less layers of material and minimal build-up on floors and walls without compromising on the integrity of the structure. To give some context of this; CemBacker 6mm  compares 18mm plywood in strength but comes with the added benefits.

Where some manufacturers pre-prime their boards, which may seem like the best route to go down for a product. The cons of this greatly supersede the pros. Having a pre-primed board, the common misconception is this replaces the need of a tanking kit, this is completely incorrect. The priming of a pre-primed board is usually acrylic or silicone based, when using these two board aka, acrylic primer then silicone adhesive / render can cause a lesser adhesion and adverse effect.

As well as over-boarding systems, DryPanel TG4 is available in 18mm and 22mm thicknesses, that can be spanned over joists and tiled on.
