Why Does Movement Matter?

Building materials are not completely static. Timber, for example, naturally expands and contracts as moisture content and environmental conditions change. Structures can also experience small amounts of movement as they settle, respond to temperature changes or experience loading.


A rigid adhesive or sealant may provide high initial strength, but if the joint cannot accommodate this movement, stress can build up within the connection. Over time, this can lead to cracking, loss of adhesion or an opening in the seal.

As timber expands and contracts, a rigid connection can be placed under considerable stress. A flexible adhesive can instead accommodate a degree of movement, helping to reduce the risk of the adhesive joint cracking as the surrounding materials move.


The objective is not to stop movement — it is to allow the connection to move without compromising the bond or seal.


Helping Maintain a Watertight Connection

The role of CEMBOND-MAX extends beyond bonding.


Because it cures to form an elastic seal, it can also help maintain a continuous barrier at joints and connections. This is particularly useful where preventing water ingress is important.

However, in construction, materials rarely remain completely stationary. A connection that is extremely rigid may transfer movement and stress directly into the surrounding materials.


Consider a timber-to-CEMBLOC® connection. If the timber moves but the adhesive cannot accommodate that movement, the stress has to go somewhere. This can contribute to cracking within the adhesive joint or surrounding materials.


A strong but elastic adhesive takes a different approach.


Rather than trying to prevent all movement, it allows controlled movement within the joint while maintaining the connection.
